Much anticipated by legions of Facebook fans, talked about by irate iPad owners and the source of numerous industry rumours, it’s finally here.

Facebook iPad App Facebook has announced today they have finally released their official app for the Apple iPad. Touted as “A new way to experience Facebook”, the app has been making headlines as eager fans grab a copy from the iTunes store.

The release of the Facebook app for iPad will mutually benefit Apple and Facebook as Apple gears up for stiff competition in the tablet market this holiday season.

Android tablet owners who are ardent Facebook fans are sure to feel left out as Facebook has not announced the official release of an app for the Android tablet platform.

The release will also have Facebook fans who just pre-ordered the $199 Amazon Kindle Fire second guessing their choice of tablet as the Kindle Fire is not likely to have facebook connectivity due to the fact the tablet will not access the Android store, despite being powered by Android OS.

Anyway, competition aside, Here are some details about the app from Facebook :

  • With high-res photos, games, chat and more, now you can get the best of Facebook—on your iPad.
  • Enjoy bigger, better photos: Your photos are high-res and easy to flip through, like a real photo album
  • Navigate anywhere, fast: Just tap, slide or pinch to move from one screen to another
  • Play games on the go: Access your favorite Facebook apps and games, wherever you are
  • Focus on what matters: Zoom in on your friends’ photos, updates and stories
  • Never lose your place: Share a photo, update your status or send a message without leaving News Feed
  • See who’s nearby: Check out the Nearby map to see what your friends are up to

A software engineer at Facebook, Leon Dubinsky, wrote in a blog post on the company’s Web site that “the app had been designed to create an immersive and fun experience on the tablet.”
