Google Releases Catalogs App for Android Tablets (4 Months After iPad Version)

By Issac Rhodes in Android Tablets, Tablet Apps
December 1st, 2011

Google has announced the release of their Catalogs app for Android but the announcement comes a full 4 months after Google already released the same Catalogs app for Apple iPad.

Apple vs AndroidIs Google sending consumers the message that Android tablets are inferior to the Apple iPad?

It would seem so.

On Monday, Google announced Google Catalogs is now available for Android tablets. From that article :

blockquote Starting today, Google Catalogs is available for Android tablets, as well as the iPad, giving you a new way to shop from the comfort of your couch. With rich product images, videos, and the ability to curate your own personal collages to share with friends, Google Catalogs makes browsing your favorite mail order catalogs easy, fun and interactive.

Google Catalogs features more than 125 brands you know and love like Nordstrom, Williams-Sonoma, Nike and Sephora. The app currently has over 400 digital catalog issues to browse across categories such as mens & women’s apparel, jewelry, gifts, gourmet, toys, kids, gadgets, sports & athletics and outdoor adventure.

Sounds good? Evidently not to loyal Android users. The issue that’s not sitting well with the Android crowd is the cold hard fact Google had already released the very same Catalogs app for iPad back in August 2011. Well before the holiday shopping season began.

So what message does that send Android tablet owners? That even Google rushes to get their apps released on the iPad, with Android release coming a full quarter behind?

This faux pas on Google’s part would be similar to Microsoft releasing the newest version of Office for Macintosh before releasing it for Windows.

In a world where technology companies compete to boost their brand awareness, especially where operating systems are concerned, it seems Google has no loyalty for standing behind their own technology.

As the owner of an Apple iPad myself, I really don’t care what Google does with Android but it’s painfully clear Google has no problem tossing Android tablet owners and manufacturers under the wheels.

Black Friday 2011 Tablet Computer Deals

By Kimberly Mills in Special Reports, Tablet News

Looking for a Black Friday deal on a tablet computer at a deep discount? There’s plenty of them out there but you might just want to wait to look for an even better deal.

black friday tablet dealsDespite an overwhelming number of retailers slashing prices on tablet computers, in-store Black Friday sales of tablet computers have been sluggish at best.

Although the Apple iPad remains pretty much unchallenged in the tablet market, Android tablets by Motorola, Samsung, Asus and Acer have been rounding out the market.

Sales numbers for RIM’s Blackberry Playbook are ndiciative of the fact that Blackberry tablets are just not a force to be reckoned with. Rounding out the bottom of the tablet computer market, Windows based tablets might seem to be the equivalent of a lump of coal in the Christmas stocking for most tablet shopping consumers.

One significant factor attributing to the sluggish in-store sales of tablet computers this Black Friday is the obvious fact that many consumers will ordering their tablets online, namely Amazon’s kindle Fire.

For consumers looking to score a deal on a tablet computer, Best Buy has a number of deals like the Asus Transformer 10.1″ Wi-Fi Tablet for $249.99 and the Toshiba Thrive 10.1″ Android Tablet for $279.99 (both excellent deals).

Office Depot has the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 10.1″ Android 32GB Tablet for $299 and the BlackBerry PlayBook 7″ 16GB Tablet slashed to $199.

Staples is offering the Acer Iconia 10.1″ Android 16GB Tablet for $299.00 (a steal for this excellent tablet) and the Blackberry Playbook 32GB Tablet $249.00.

Even Walmart is jumping into the fray by offering the Amazon Kindle Fire Android Tablet for $199.

BUT, don’t run out thinking you’re going to get the best deal on Black Friday. Expect even further price slashing in the weeks leading up to Christmas as retailers gear up to move out stockpiled inventory.
